Message from Jim Bird, President

Jim Bird, President2007 is Brampton Safe City Association’s 25th anniversary. Congratulations to everyone for achieving a quarter-century of excellence in safety programming and education.

Four years ago, through the collaborative work of the Brampton Safe City Partnership, Brampton achieved national designation as a safe community from the Safe Communities Foundation of Canada (2003). Since then, we’ve become increasingly recognized as a Canadian leader in safety. This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) is designating Brampton as an International Safe Community. We are the 1st city in the Greater Toronto Area, and one of only 10 North American cities to achieve this distinction.

This award means we are on the right path to making our community as safe as it can be. WHO’s Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion in Stockholm, Sweden is the world’s recognized authority on community safety. We’ve been evaluated by the same rigorous standards as any other community on the planet, and have achieved or exceeded all of the criteria required for designation. This recognition now positions us as a global leader in community safety.

Joining this worldwide network of designated international safe communities will also give us a tremendous opportunity to learn from other cities and nations, to share ideas and to be part of a united global partnership in safety.

As we move forward from our recent achievements and anniversary celebrations, we will continue to work with our community partners and citizen volunteers, delivering high-quality safety initiatives to people of all ages in Brampton. For the foreseeable future, our key areas of focus will remain as crime reduction, road safety, children’s injury prevention, fire prevention, safety for seniors, emergency preparedness, workplace safety and violence prevention for youth.

We welcome our newest partner, Sheridan College, to Brampton’s safety network, and look forward to working with college administration and students to bring new ideas and resources to the network, and to help integrate students’ textbook learning with real life safety challenges.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to our success. You’ve helped to make Brampton one of the safest places in the world.

Jim Bird, President
