History
The Brampton
Safe City Association originated as the Vandalism Prevention
Committee in 1982, a special committee of Brampton City Council.
The original purpose of the organization was to tackle a growing
vandalism and graffiti problem affecting city facilities throughout
Brampton. Between 1982 and 1988, the committee worked with
volunteers to develop and deliver highly effective crime prevention
programs such as: START (Students Teaching Awareness and
Responsibility Today), Neighbourhood Watch and STEP (Seniors Taking
Extra Precautions).
By 1990, the committee had
expanded its crime prevention mandate and became the Brampton Crime
Prevention Association to reflect its broader involvement in
programs such as Business Crime Watch, the Block Parent Program,
CHALLENGE (for persons with disabilities) and Trash and Consequences
(an anti-vandalism/anti-litter program for children).

In 1997, the Brampton Crime Prevention Association initiated a
millennium project, aimed at making Brampton the safest city in
Canada by the year 2000. The project, known as the Brampton Safe
City Campaign, brought together community partners from across
the City to collectively encourage residents and businesses "to do
just one thing to make Brampton a safer city". The enormous success
of the campaign reinforced the notion that crime prevention, injury
reduction, and road safety were all important and connected
priorities for keeping Brampton a safe and wonderful City. As a
result, the Association revised its name to reflect a broadened
definition of community safety and officially become the Brampton
Safe City Association in 1999. Since that time, successful new
initiatives such as YES, (Youth Education and Safety), Road Watch,
Youth Safety Television, the Crime Prevention Academy Leadership
Project and the Safe City Partnership have continued the tradition
of developing creative programs that support the residents and
businesses of Brampton with helping to keep the City a safe place to
live, play and work.

2003 has seen the efforts of Brampton Safe City and its partners
earn the City of Brampton national designation as a "Safe
Community". As part of this designation, the Safe City Partners
have established a "Blue Print" for creating a safer city. The plan
identifies how the Partnership will target a reduction of crime and
injuries for children, seniors, workplaces, motorists, residents and
businesses in the City of Brampton.
