About the Award

A great community like the City of Brampton is comprised of special individuals who selflessly give their time and effort to make their neighbourhoods better places to live and work. 

The Community Safety Hero of the Year Award was created to recognize these special individuals who give back to their neighbours in a way that helps us to enjoy a safer and better community. 

The Community Safety Hero of the Year will be selected from public nominations of regular—but extraordinary citizens who have been identified for doing something significant that made our city a safer and better place to live this past year. These nominees do not have to have done something that is considered heroic in the traditional sense.  Their heroic act may have simply been an act of kindness or a spirit of community leadership that led to a safer and more positive neighbourhood or community.  A basic list of criteria for nominees is listed below:

Award Criteria

• The award nominee may not be a law enforcement or emergency services employee.
• The individual must be nominated by one of the following: a resident of Brampton, a business owner in Brampton, or an employee of a Brampton-based business or community organization.
• The Award Winner will be selected based on the following considerations:
  • Did the effort of the nominee result in a positive change to a safety problem or situation?
  • Has the leadership or actions of the individual contributed to making people be or feel safer in Brampton?
  • Did the act of the nominee prevent someone else from suffering harm?
  • If the nominee had not contributed the effort they did, would an unfavourable or un-safe situation have occurred or remained?

How to Nominate a Candidate For the Award

Complete the Community Safety Hero Award Nomination Form [PDF] and return it by fax, mail or email to The Community Safety Hero of the Year Award Selection Committee c/o Brampton Safe City:

The individual who selects the successful nominee will receive 2 complimentary tickets to the 27th Annual SafeCity Awards Celebration.

Award Winner Selection

• The Award winner will be selected from all nominations received by a committee of representatives from the Brampton Guardian and Brampton Safe City Association.
• The Award winner will be notified by no later than Friday, October 30, 2009.
• Award Winners must be prepared to attend the Safe City Awards Gala on Thursday, November 12, 2009 between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
• The Community Safety Hero of the Year will be announced in a November edition of the Brampton Guardian and the winner will receive their award as part of the 27th Annual Safe City Awards Gala on Thursday, November 12, 2009.
