Rogers Television & Brampton Safe City Present Youth Safety Television

~Local Youth Produced Public Service Announcements and Features to Air on Station~

Monday January 12, 2004 – Dufferin-Peel, ON]: Rogers Television, in partnership with the Brampton Safe City Association, are proud to announce the launch of Youth Safety Television.  YSTV is a unique project developed with support from the National Crime Prevention Strategy.  The project involved the recruitment and training of 15 Brampton youth who created Public Service Announcements on a variety of safety topics affecting youth in the Region of Peel. These ‘for youth by youth’ safety announcements will begin airing on the Monday January 26th edition of Dufferin-Peel Living and will continue to air for the remainder of the season as part of regular program breaks on Rogers Television.

Jake Dheer, Station Manager, Rogers Television, says the broadcast of these segments will provide a wide reach of valuable information for today’s youth. “Youth safety issues are an important concern for us and many of our viewers, especially at such a crucial time when safety continues to be top of mind for many local residents.  I believe our younger viewers will value these messages as they come directly from their peers,” adds Dheer.

Topics covered in these Public Service Announcements include Internet safety, drug abuse, racism, date rape, drinking and driving, and bullying. Each announcement, varying in length from thirty to sixty seconds, was written and produced by youth participating in the project, with the assistance of staff from Rogers and Brampton Safe City.  In addition to creating Public Service Announcements, youth involved in the project will appear on Dufferin-Peel Living, as part of a new monthly feature, highlighting youth safety issues in the Region.  Topics for this segment will be identified through a newly created YSTV Web site available through the Brampton Safe City Association at www.bramptonsafecity.ca.

Students and YSTV participants Arhia Thorpe and Ke-Jia Chong found their experiences with the project particularly rewarding. “Apart from meeting new people and receiving amazing training, we had the opportunity to be on television and make a difference by educating our community. Aria Thorpe  “There was so much to learn and see during our time together. We shared our experiences of violence at local schools, from gangs to alcohol, and our solutions…our time together strengthened our belief that we could really impact and help our community.”  Ke-Jia Chong
