Promoting A Safe Summer...
Monday, July 4, 2005
Brampton , Ontario - Brampton residents should feel a little safer this summer thanks to the work of a special Community Safety Team organized by the Brampton Safe City Association.
The team, comprised of four college students with training in a variety of safety topics, will be attending community events and youth programs in Brampton throughout the summer to promote safety to people of all ages.
Armed with practical tips and educational materials on child safety, crime prevention, road and pedestrian safety, bicycle and skateboarding safety, water safety and other topics, the safety team will be challenging Brampton residents to ‘do just one thing to make Brampton a safer community”.
Team members Ashley, Brad, Felicia and Ashleigh provide people with ideas for safety activities, then challenge them to take action.
The Community Safety Team is also working with the Peel Regional Police, the City of Brampton Traffic Engineering Services and the Region of Peel Transportation Engineering Services to promote road safety in Brampton neighbourhoods that have experienced traffic problems (i.e. motorists speeding through residential areas, busy pedestrian crossings, red-light running, etc.).
The team will be setting up a radar messaging board at selected locations near parks, schools and residential areas to show drivers the speed of their moving automobiles. This state-of-the-art equipment is highly effective in slowing drivers down. As well, the team records the licence numbers of vehicles driving dangerously or aggressively, and reports these to the police through the Road Watch Program. Errant drivers will receive a letter from the Peel Regional Police asking them to drive more responsibly in future.
"At almost every place we've set up, local residents have stopped their cars or come out of their homes to thank us for promoting safe driving in their neighbourhood", reports Team Leader Ashley Van Eysinga. "It's a great feeling."
During this ten-week safety campaign, the team will also visit numerous summer camp programs, daycares and Ontario Early Years Centres to teach children about stranger awareness, as well as pedestrian and bicycle safety.
The Community Safety Team is sponsored by the Brampton Safe City Association, Region of Peel, Human Resources And Skills Development Canada, Graham Munro Charitable Foundation, City of Brampton and Peel Regional Police.
The team will be attending upcoming community events including:
- Carabram (July 8 – 10)
- Lucas Holtom Carnival Day (July 9)
- Classic Cars & Legendary Stars (July 14 – 16)
- Nitty Gritty Brama Ching Wing Ding (Aug 1)
- Roberta Bondar Public School Safety Promotion Day (Aug 2)
Look for them and take the safety challenge. Read Previous News Releases
